Ready for Spring? Get yer kit serviced!

“A beautiful summer’s day and you’re about to get in on a dive that reckons to be great what with 10m viz. and a seal spotted in the Bay.” An average dive at Martin’s Haven you may think, that’s until your regulator’s first stage high pressure seat blows…….!!

Well summer is almost here folks, although as this goes to print it’s feeling a little to chilly to even think about diving just yet. However, to avoid the above scenario and subsequent disappointment, now is a good time to get the equipment back out of the bag and make sure that everything is serviced ready to get wet ! For those of you who haven’t had their regulator serviced in over a year or 100 dives, its time to get it looked at whether that’s with us here at West Wales Divers or elsewhere. Ensure your tank is in test: hydrostatic test every five years and visual every two and a half years. If you’re unsure, give us a ring or bring it in. As I recently explained to a diver that thought his regulator would be fine after being stuck in his loft for five years, “It’s life support equipment, treat it like that.”

Where to get your kit serviced? Find a reputable dive centre that has either been recommended to you or you know of to be a professional outfit. Don’t take it to someone’s shed, or pass it on to a mate that’s good with his hands. As I’ve said previously, “It’s life support equipment, treat it like that.” You want your equipment to look after you, so look after it ! Make sure that this season, you do rinse it with fresh water afterwards. Make sure no water enters your first stage whilst cleaning your reg. , and make sure you lubricate/wax any and all zips, including your dive bag! By taking five minutes at the end of the diving day, you’ll significantly lengthen the life of any and all equipment you have.

This year we have established a new drying facility at the centre. So use and abuse it !! That’s what we built it for…………
